Garibaldi Park Traverse
Garibaldi Provincial Park is a scenic gem that lies between Squamish and Whistler. It’s our back yard and we truly believe it has some of the best hiking in Canada, if not the world.
This trip takes us through the main artery of the park in a one-way traverse from the Cheakamus trailhead to Rubble Creek past 25km of scenic wonders including Cheakamus Lake, the Black Tusk and Garibaldi Lake. If you want to try out an overnight backcountry experience near Whistler then this really is the trip to experience.
Please bear in mind that this is a wilderness hike and the itinerary is only a suggestion and not set in stone.
DAY ONE – We depart from Whistler at 9am to drive to the trailhead at Cheakamus Lake. We will explore the incredible old growth forest here, one of the best preserved areas in the region before crossing the Cheakamus River and beginning our ascent to Black Tusk meadows. After a couple of hours of climbing through the trees we will suddenly break out into the open below the local landmark known as Black Tusk. This toothlike feature is actually an extinct volcano and features heavily in local First Nations’ mythology. We make our camp in the meadows alongside Helm Creek. (Distance 8-10km, 600m elevation gain, 3.5-4.5 hours)
DAY TWO – After breaking camp we continue further into the park to the scenic lookout over Garibaldi Lake known as Panorama Ridge. The views form here will simply take your breath away, they are the best in the entire Sea to Sky Region. On return from Panorama Ridge we will head down to the lakeside where we will camp for the next two nights. (Distance 16km, 670m elevation gain, 560m elevation loss, 8 hours)
DAY THREE – From Garibaldi Lake our objective will be to hike to the base of Black Tusk. for those who are brave enough we can continue up to the summit for fine views over Garibaldi Lake and the park. (Distance 15km, 530m elevation gain, 530m elevation loss, 8 hours)
DAY FOUR – After a leisurely breakfast we will pack up camp for the last time and descend the 9km (5.5miles) down to the Rubble Creek trail where our vehicle will have been moved so we can pick it up. (Distance 9km, 900m elevation loss, 3 hours)
